Whoosh!"Thank God, I thought as we plopped into our assigned seats. We were heading to San Francisco, and I was nervously thinking about all my assignments that were due the next week. What we won't do for love? the Memorial Day weekend, clearly not a good time to take a break, but I'm the adventurous type, and it's not often my homebody hubby likes to travel. So I said sign me up.
Well here I'm am at my sister-in-law's home, along with my lovely niece who recently got accepted to Berkeley while the rest of our clan, went to check out the local community college that my nephew will be attending, and then go for a walk. I hope they won't forget us, cause we haven't had dinner, but with my sister-in-law in charge, it isn't likely.
Well, as I was looking at a four hours plus flight square in the eyes,so I nearly fell over my neighbor plucking the earphones from the flight attendant's hands. I frankly, didn't care that the audio was garbled along with hissing sounds between the intellible worthless cliche dialogues.
Romantic comedies aren't my thing, but the choices didn't look promising; it was between watching the movie or struggling to keep my eyes open through the humming of the hypnotic engines. You can guess what I chose. Amy Adams stars in the movie, who apparently is the flavor of the month in Hollywood, along side new hunky leading man, Mathew Goode in an unlikely love connection.
The premise of the movie is the typical scenario,a desperate 20 something female desiring to secure a future mate which translates, nowadays into nabbing herself a doctor. In the old fairy tales it was a prince on a white Arab charger, in the present day capitalist class conscious society, it's the god-like physician donning a long white lab coat and and stethescope encircling his neck.
Ana(Amy Adams) is frustrated by her beau's lack of interest to seal the deal, and pop the question. After discussing Irish customs with her father, there is one particular custom that intrigues her;the custom that allows the female to do the asking.
How original.
So, I was a captive audience, and it was a good thing because I would asked for my money back.
Don't bother checking it out on dvd.

Robin Hood
Well, it's tough when there is not a good movie to see, and you're not in the mood to be adventurous, sooo my husband and I talked ourselves into seeing Robin Hood, starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. I'm not a big fan of Crowe, but simply love Cate Blancett ever since the movie "Elizabeth." When the choices at our local theater is "Furry Vengeance," "How to Train Your Dragon," or "MacGruber" and "Shrek" it's a no a brainer.
The scenery was what you'd expect in an epic movie like that, but I would get more satisfaction on our car rides through Goodrich or Holly. The two and a half hour flick was an hour was way too long. And the romance between Crowe and Blancett were just an afterthought, merely snipets probably pasted together from the cutting room floor.
I have no idea what the producers were thinking when they put this gem onto the big screen-it was definitely was thin on plot, not to mention it appeared to be haphazardly pieced together. What they were betting on, was throwing a few big names together, a few underwhelming fight scenes, and throw a team of horses storming through big screen. As you can probably figure, I'd wait for it to come out on dvd.
Just some personal advice to Russ, I think you'd benefit from a speech coach. All through the movie, you'd here couples whispering, "What he say?"
The high point in our (my) movie experience, was when my husband was fiddling with his wedding band, and DING! We looked at each other,and he knew what he had to do. My look spoke volumes, he didn't even ask. He was going to brave it alone. It landed on the sugary sticky floor and he reluctantly had to feel around through the globby mess of half-eaten popcorn, and melted chocolate goobers.
Speaking about unsanitary places, I hope all you movie goers bring a pocket size purrell with you. Can you imagine the germs that lurk on the railings and cup holder?
Yuck!

Modern Family
I don't really watch much television, and in the past I was an avid news junkie. My schedule would typically be set from 6:30 to 11:3o, beginning with Katie Couric, which I could barely tolerate on the Today Show until and concluding with the Colbert Report at 11:30. Couric kind of grew on me when she was getting guff from critics and there was talk of pulling her. Included in my shedule would be Chris Matthews, Keith Olberman, Rachel Maddow, The Daily Show, and I would top off the night with The Colbert Report.
I had to ween myself off those acrimonious/ negative news shows, because saw myself falling into a funk. Negativity breeds negativity, and I was seeing it seep into my daily activities and mood. Now I choose more wisely,and considering that I don't watch much television, I'm happy with a few shows a week.
Desperate Housewives and Medium was always a night to stay home, but now there's a couple of new shows in town, Modern Family followed by Cougar Town. We were in Philly last year for the NCTE conference when our friends were talking about t.v. shows. Someone mentioned Modern Family and couldn't stop raving about the it. The following week, being the adventurous couple that we are, we were looking forward to an innovative smart show. That last show that we remember being innovative, creative, and avant-garde was Nothern Exposure, but I don't think that any of the shows nowadays could never hold a candle to it.
Modern Family is the best sitcom out there, it's emblematic of today's ecelectic home environment. There are three families: Jay is remarried to Gloria Delgado who has a very precocious and adult-like son, Manny. The second family is Jay's daughter, Claire, who's married to Phil Dunphy and have three children. There's Haley, who's in high school and has all the drama issues that comes with being a teenager, then there's Alex, an intelligent middle schooler then there's Luke, the baby of the family, and Claire likes it that way. Then there's Mitch who is Jay's son and Claire's brother. Mitch's family includes partner Cam and newly adopted baby Lily.
I'm going to attempt to the season's finale. I hope you like it as much as we do.

"Taken"
I just saw Taken with Liam Neisen, what great movie. I remember seeing last year for the first time and it was thrilling. We had seen a series of intense movies, on of them Revolutionary Road, that was also an excellent movie, but very depressing. We were reeling from the effects that movie had on our psyche. It just sucked the life out of us for several weeks.
My husband and were trying to get that sunny disposition back when we walked into the dark theatre and witnessed two hours of rambo-like destruction that made us smile from ear to violent ear. What can one say about Taken. Well, it's like this: Some people go to France for honeymoons and others want to feel cultured so they go to visit the museums. In Taken, Niesen is visiting simply to kick some serious French patstry after some Albaninas have the audacity to kidnapp his daughter and sell into prostitution. Niesen is one of those special ops who has retired, but when these Albanians snag his daughter, he goes into action laying waste to everyone who speaks a Middle eastern tongue, even going so far as to shoot his best frend's wife when he fails to answer questions fast enough. Yeah, if you want some cathertic fun, this is your flick.

My husband and I usually catch a movie at least once a week. It's really convenient living down the road from the NCG Trillium movie theater. But sometimes, especially when summer rolls around, we like to drive to East Lansing, our old stomping ground. We have a great dinner at an Italian restaurant Spagnuolo's, a family owned business that has the best pasta dishes. Then we usually catch a flick at the charming Williamston Sun Theater and watch whatever is showing.
The Sun is a single screen theater which is also a family owned business which has recently been remodeled with plush dark velvet chairs and brand new cupholders. I mention this because I really don't miss my popcorn and drink sticking to the theater floor. The admission is a reasonable $4.00 popcorn, pop, and candy are also very affordable.
This past Friday The Back Up Plan was playing at the Sun, so we decided to have dinner and then go the show. I'm a fan of Jennifer Lopez, but confess wasn't thrilled to see it.
As I predicted, it was the typical romantic comedy, replete with cliche dialogues.
Chloe (Lopez) is formerely a successful professional that searches out more fulfilling life dreams, like owning a pet shop. But the only element to complete her dreams, is to become a mother. She has no immediate prospects, so her only alternative is to be artificially inseminated. Coincidentally, when she exits the clinic, encounters Stan (O'Loughlin) who enters the same taxi. Instead of bickering over the cab, she relinquishes it only to cross paths with him again.
You certainly could see where this is going. The only contrived remote tension is when Chloe finally reveals that she is pregnant by a sperm donor And whether Stan loves her enough to take on the added responsibilities to bring children into the world.
I was certainly expecting more of Lopez, but the reality is, I didn't go to see the movie, I went to visit the Sun and relish in its charming ambiance.
If you did see the movie, I would like to know your opinions. If you would like to see it, wait until it comes out on dvd. You shouldn't have to wait long.
If you've seen a good movie, please post it. I'm debating on whether or not to see Iron Man 2. Do I need to see Iron Man 1 to completely understand the story?
