My nostalgic hubby has a bunch of "Leave It To Beaver" episodes on video tapes, no really; he spent a whole Saturday afternoon diligently taping out the commercials. He used to watch them as re-runs when he was younger, and no I'm not as old as he is.
After a watching a few, I got hooked. We usually watch a couple right before we slip into Lala Land. There's no screaming, no violence, and and no swearing. We're not prudish, but like to go to sleep with pleasant images in our heads.
If some are not familiar with the series, it took place in the 1950s with mothers donning pearl necklaces while they vacuuming the living room, and fathers wearing three piece suits to dinner. I think it was more propaganda and Americana than reality.
Last night's episode, was a very sweet one. Beaver was home Saturday morning and as he was placing the garbage on the curb, was invited by the garbage man to go over his house to play with his sons. Ward without the guidance of his dutiful wife, June he gave his permission to go. Whoa!!!! What the heck Ward, what are you thinking? That seems kinda strange, especially nowadays, but child predators didn't exist, right?
When Beaver wants to go again the next day, Ward suggests that the boys come to their house. June hears about the invitation and expects two hoodlums, but is pleasantly surprise with their polite and exemplary manners. Ward almost trips when the boys extend their hands for a firm and manly handshake.
The visitors show appreciation for the simplest things and help guide the Beaver and Wally recognize them as well.
The Cleaver parents are touched when their sons see them through the lens of another.

Eddie Haskell had to be one of the best characters ever created! Even though he was was always trouble, I think most people have had a friend like him.
ReplyDeleteI grew up watching Beaver Cleaver and still think he's one of the kind!
I remember watching Nick at Night reruns as a child... The Cosby Show was my generation in the 1980's. Sadly, not so many great shows that I enjoy lately.
ReplyDeleteI like Eddie Haskell too. Without a mischievious character like Eddie, Wally wouldn't look so wholesome. How about Gilbert or Larry Mandelo? You know Eddie was the only character who thought outside the box and he's the only one who took risks. By inserting characacters like Eddie or Gilbert it underscores Wally and Beaver's wholesome qualities.
ReplyDeleteHow about the girls in the show like Judy or Penny? I simply loved Penny and her independent attitude. It's very sad girls start becoming wall flowers after 5th or 6th grade.
I think that there's a type of morning that goes on in every girl's life. This summer I starting reading Betty Freidan's Feminine Mystique, and it made me angry, so angry I had to put it down. I was angry because all the injustices we have to endure. What angers me most is the hegemonic nature in our oppression.I don't like the fact that women don't have more solidarity.
I used to love the Cosby show too. Was anybody ever a fan of "Good Times"?
